The “Gap” Theory

Did you know there is no Biblical evidence for the “gap” theory? A quick rundown–the gap theory is the theory that between the third and fourth day of creation, to mesh evolution’s millions of years with creation’s six days. This is also when the fossil record was supposidly started, and when there were people on the earth who were destroyed to make the earth for Adam. Many “Bible teachers” believe this, but it just doesn’t hold water.

Think about it. God told us to work six days and rest the seventh. Supposing a day was like a thousand years (because of 2Peter 3:8 which says, “beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” This by the way does not mean every day is a thousand years in God’s sight; it means with the Lord there’s no time.). We’d have to work for six thousand years before our thousand-year rest! Or how about when the Israelites marched around Jericho–for seven thousand years! Ok, that angle doesn’t work. Let’s come from two different angles.

How could those poor plants survive the thousand-year (or longer) day? We all know plants need the sun, right? Well, there was no sun yet. The plants could survive a 12-hour night, but NOT a thousand-year sabbatical.

The Bible states death came into the world through one man’s sin. ‘by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin’ (Romans 5:12). But when God created the sun, the moon, and the stars, and everything after that, He said it was good. Sin is not good, so sin couldn’t have come into the world yet. So Satan did not fall before Adam was created, either, as some gap theorists think.
