Joe’s Baptism

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

On Monday, July 28th, we gathered together with some friends at Lake Elmo to celebrate the joyous occasion of Joe’s baptism.

Dad has chosen that we can make the decision to obey Jesus and be baptized or not at the age of 18, which in America is legal adult age. Baptism is an identification or dedication. You can be baptized into many things. We are baptized into the way of Jesus Christ, as He commanded. (Matthew 28:16-20) Baptism doesn’t save you, it’s just an outward expression of an inward change.

So anyway. Quite a few families showed up, which was very nice. Here’s some pictures (all can be viewed here), and at the end, videos. Some pictures were taken by Mr. H., most by Beth. Videos by Eric.

As they were walking out, Dad’s footing became unsteady and he grabbed onto Joe. “Somebody’s going to get baptized!” he said.

“You can plug your nose.”

“It gives me great pleasure to baptize you, Joe, in the way, the obedience, and the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.”

Just the end of the video.

Afterwards, we all came back home and sat or stood around talking until the last family finally left at quarter to twelve. Dad invited everyone to stay for a week like a real Biblical celebration but can you believe nobody took us up on it?? Man…what’s wrong with people nowadays?

Anyways. It was a very exciting occasion and I’m glad I could share it by video!! The first one is longer but worth it.

Biases, Public Education, and the Bible

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

The only time you truly look at something without the screen of your bias is the first time. Once you’ve made up your mind, that bias forever colors your thinking. It’s possible to change your bias, but it’s hard.

A bias is the way you look at things. Think of glasses. If you have rose-colored glasses, everything has a rose-colored tint. The analogy of changing biases doesn’t quite extend fully to glasses, though, because it’s easier to change glasses than to change biases. But I hope you get the point; everything looks different through your bias.

Here’s something to think about:

You take a monkey who’s never seen balls or color (or at least red and green), and set two balls in front of him, a red ball and a green ball. This is the moment of decision. Which will he choose? He looks back and forth from one to the other, indecisive. Each are presented to him equally. Finally he chooses the red ball. Next, five green balls and a red ball are presented to him. It’s automatic, he chooses the red one, no matter there are more green ones.

Like so it is with issues, facts, and biases. Say the initial red and green balls were issues. The monkey chose one side. Say the additional balls are facts. Though there are more facts for the green side than the red, the bias leans towards the red.

Why do you think public education is so “important”? Because if they can get their opinion in your kid first, your kid is biased to their bias. If they are teaching untrue things, your kid is biased to their untrue bias, and will most likely stick to that bias no matter how many facts are shown them. (By reading this, I’m sure you can see my bias!)

The problem comes in when people read the Bible with a biased view. Everybody does, including me, because we all have biases. That is the problem. The solution is to put on God’s bias. When Jesus was talking to the people, He didn’t talk in worldly terms. He talked in Godly terms. From God’s perspective, the only one that matters. The Pharisees tried to understand it with their understanding, and it didn’t work. If we try to understand the Bible with our 21st century perspective, it doesn’t work. It wasn’t meant to be understood by people’s perspectives at all. It was meant to be understood from God’s perspective. God’s perspective is radically different from ours. His perspective doesn’t make sense to us in our sin-drenched view of things (though we should continually seek to have His perspective on things), but you know what? That’s ok. I, for one, am glad I don’t understand all of God because if I did, He would be a pretty small God indeed.

God’s Sense of Humor

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

It’s been a standing joke, though (somewhat) true, among our family and relatives that we exist on beans and rice. This impression is given for two reasons:
1. This past year we were afraid we wouldn’t have enough meat, so we went easy on that.
2. You know what Dave Ramsey says; beans and rice! It’s cheap!
It’s also been known (well, joked about) that a “treat” is beans AND rice in the same dinner, or meat in the chili. (By the way, did you know there’s two kinds of chili? I was just curious so I looked it up. “Chili” is actually the meatless variety, “chili con carne” is actually the mostly-meat kind. Just a bit of trivia for ya there!)

Anyways. God really does have a sense of humor. Just think about it, and take a look at this verse! (It’s Joe’s life verse, by the way. Ask him about it!)

Psalm 59:7
Indeed, they belch with their mouth;
Swords are in their lips;
For they say, “Who hears?”

On our end, we’re experiencing God’s sense of humor right now. A few months ago Mom bought 50 pound sacks of red potatoes for a good price, now, potatoes aren’t something we usually have all the time! Secondly, our pinto beans ran out. Thirdly, we have a lot of deer meat (two freezers full!!). Guess what we’ve had for dinner the last few nights? Meat and potatoes!

At dinnertime, I had made two 9×13 pans of meatloaf, and Mom said, “Boy, I feel weird having so much meat.”
“Well,” I said, “if I make one pan you’d say it wasn’t enough; now I made two pans and you feel weird?? Well if you feel so bad about it I could feed the one pan to the dog!”
“No, it’s just weird having this much meat all the time!”
“Yeah, and the beans are gone!”
“This must be God’s sense of humor!” Mom said.
Ben aptly concluded, “If this is God’s sense of humor, He can keep at it!”

What We Saw and What We Did

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Saturday
10:30 am Off on our way! Dad said we were supposed to get up at 7 (he set his clock for 6:30…that’s cuz he hits snooze so much!), so I got up a little early to finish an email, but Mom wasn’t up yet so I had to wait a bit anyway! But I did get my email sent.
We packed our bedding and bags, and anything else we forgot, until we forgot something else! No, I mean we packed all the things we hadn’t before. Let’s hope we have enough toilet paper…
We don’t have cookies this time, either! Too bad. Let’s hope we have enough emergency rations too, eh?

You know how when an apple rots it is mulch for the ground? Well, is it cannibalism if an apple tree is mulched by its own apples?

10:45 am At the gas station. Ben’s filling his tank and Dad’s filling the gas tanks for the generator. You know this time, only the eight of us are going. (Only. ha!) Mom, Tess, Rase, Jay, Abby, and Elle Jane are at home…that means Dad, Ben, Joe, Eric, Beth, Em, Kate, and I are going. Over half the family, thanks to the twins being two instead of one!
We will definitely get to camp sooner than last time! (more…)
