Review: WP Wall, FLIR for WordPress, PicApp

WP Wall

Certainly better looking than a cbox, WP Wall is faster, too, using Ajax. Click the “Leave a Reply” link (or customize it to say what you want), and the reply box pops down, allowing visitors to comment on your site as a whole, somewhat like a guestbook, again, only faster. Personally, I don’t have a use for it, but it’s a fun little widget.
Likes: The speed was nice. It’s also nice to have complete control over it, unlike a cbox.
Dislikes: It isn’t made known in the beginning that you need to either 1. approve each comment, or 2. allow people to use their email address (changed in the settings). If you use the email address thing, it approves by email address.

FLIR for WordPress

This simple plugin replaces the text of your choice (whether in h1 tags, h2, h3…a div…you name it!) with an image in the font of your choice…saying what you wanted it to say. For instance, if I had it change all my h2′s, the title of this whole post would be in the font of my choosing. As an image, yes, but in the font I want. I’m not sure how that goes for SEO, but oh well. It’s very simple, considering some of the stuff I’ve tried to implement over the years to get the same effect!

PicApp

Need a stock photo image in your post? How about one that’s legal? Here you go: insert a free, legal, stock image into your post, directly from the New Post page. Handy! Search right from your own admin, insert the picture, and you’re done. Note: All photos come from the site picapp.com and I don’t know if they have bad pictures or not. Search at your discretion.

Review: Disk Usage, Admin Menu, External Links

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Disk Usage

Sure, you can check your disk usage by logging into your host, but this is neat–check from your WordPress! It will show you the disk usage for all the folders in the folder your WordPress is installed in. For instance, I have WordPress installed in my root (www.allanne.com), so it checked the usage of alllll the folders in there, which is handy! Easy installation (I’m into easy!)–upload, activate, done!

Admin Menu

A plugin that will add a toolbar to the top of your blog with links to key places in your admin. Handy, but I think if you aren’t logged in, it shouldn’t put a bar up there anyway. Also, if you’re gonna use it, be sure to have it installed before you code your template, as it does mess with the CSS a bit. Useful, if it’s something you want! I give it a 3/5 because it did some strange, unexpected things to my header besides just moving it down.

External Links

The external links plugin for WordPress lets you process outgoing links differently from internal links, by adding a little arrow beside all outgoing links in your posts, like this: Test link external link. (Original arrow was more of the default-link blue; I changed mine to match my color scheme a little better.) Very easy–upload, activate, done. If you want to change the color of the arrow, just edit the image and upload. I don’t think I’ll keep it, personally, but it’s very nice!

Review: Acronym Replacer, Brian’s Threaded Comments, cForms II, No Self Pings

Acronym Replacer

This is a great plugin; I just don’t use it anymore because I realized I don’t really use acronyms very much on my blog! This plugin wraps acronyms (defined in the plugin file) with the acronym tag <acronym title="by the way">btw</acronym>. Works great, IF you like editing your plugins. Customization is done through the Plugins > Edit Plugins.
Rating: ★★★★☆

Brian’s Threaded Comments

This was the only threaded comments plugin I found. If I remember correctly, it was a little difficult to install. I didn’t like it that I had to replace my comments.php file, because as you can probably tell I edited mine! Likes: Threaded comments. When deactivated, degrades nicely. Dislikes: Even if I’m logged in, I had to enter my information which got VERY TIRESOME (that’s why I quit using it).
Rating: ★★★½☆

cForms II

Comment form. In a word: Awesome. Allows multiple contact forms with as many inputs as you need. Also has sectioning, so you can have different sections of your contact form. Comes stock with a bunch of style options (stylesheets), and is easily edited if you know CSS. The only (small) complaint I have about it is it said the credit line can be edited out, but the only way to edit it out is CSS. It’s not a huge deal, though!

No Self Pings

Handy, drop-and-forget-it plugin for not pinging your own blog! Good grief, why do *I* need to be informed I’m linking to one of my own pages?? Yeah. Pretty simple!

WordPress Plugin Reviews: Star Rating, One Click

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

I’ve decided to review plugins I test, since I try so many.

Star Rating

First off, I have Star Rating, the review plugin I’m currently using for star rating! It’s exactly what I wanted. Extremely easy to use (especially after fiddling with WP Review Stuff and one I couldn’t even get to work–the URL/name slips my mind), it displays very nice images that will work for probably anyone (yes, I’m using the default images) and is very well documented.

One Click

This is two things, a plugin, and a Firefox extension. The plugin can probably be used stand-alone (but if you have Firefox, by all means use the extension!). The Plugin: With the plugin, you can delete plugins from your server from your administration, which is very handy if you don’t want to or can’t bring up an FTP client! The Extension: Working in conjunction with the plugin, you right-click a .zip file, hover over One-Click Install, choose whether you want to install a plugin or theme, then it’ll download and unzip it on your server in the proper place. Then takes you to your admin (the one-click page, actually, then you have to go to your plugin page–the only gripe I have…I think it’d be better if it went directly to the Plugins page), where you can then activate the plugin. Awesome overall!
