A Six Year Old’s Perception of Fair and Square
Life isn’t fair. If you haven’t heard that before, sorry to break it to you in such a cruel fashion, but it’s only true. I’ll give you an example. We have twelve kids. Seven are girls, five are boys. Is that unfair, or what??
You get the point!
Now, twelve IS an even number, but even still, things aren’t fair in our house. It’s impossible at times to be fair twelve (or eleven, since Elle Jane is still just a baby) ways! Because of that, I guess the little ones don’t have a good idea of what fair and square is. Take a look at what Rase said.
Last night he was being a know-it-all and telling Tess and Jay that I had dished everything up rightly. They didn’t believe him, so he appealed to me. “Anne, didn’t you give Tess a lot, Abby a little, Jay a medium big little, and me a bigger?” (He didn’t learn his grammar from me. I promise. Just had to point that out.)
“Yeah.”
“See?” he turned to Tess and Jay. “Fair and square!”

If you wanted to be fair, you’d give the olders a smaller dose, and the youngers a bigger dose. Because that way, it would make up for their size!
It’s just like the bunkbed philosophy. Why do they put the big one on top, the medium one in the middle, and the small one on the bottom?! If the top bed were to sollapse at any time, the big one would fall on the medium one, and thus making the middle bed collapse and crush the small one!! Using the same bunkbeds, the small one collapses(which, in my opinion is more likely): The small one gets crushed, and has more weight on him! Just doesn’t make sense does it?
I finally figured out though, with age that, the reason for putting the big one on top, is for a couple of reasons: (1) They’re generally taller. (2) They are less likely to fall off the bed, and if they do, they are less likely to be hurt, despite weighing more(turns out their size works as a parachute!). (3) Oldest always get the top bunk. End of story.
