Last Day of Hunting Season

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Yesterday was the last day of hunting season…for deer, at least. Elk season has been extended into December! Well, yesterday we were “on our stand”, aka the house. It was about 20 minutes to the end of shooting light, so Dad looked out the front and Ben looked out the back…and there were deer, near where I’d gotten mine on Thursday! It was funny how Ben described Beth later.
“She just went to her room, got her gun, came back, calmly fired, and went to put her gun back away.”
She didn’t get it put away, though, because Dad called her back so the twins could use her gun. They didn’t get anything, though.

You see, though, yesterday we were processing the deer! Six deer total we had (two of mine, two of Ben’s, one of Eric’s and one a guy gave us), then right at the end of shooting light, Beth’s! We didn’t get to hers last night; we started really late and got all but Beth’s deer cut up. Some were frozen solid, like mine from last Sunday and Ben’s little one! Those ones we thawed downstairs during the processing process. Three others (the doe I got here, Eric’s buck, and one of Ben’s) we had on a tarp the night before, downstairs in front of the woodstove. That was a sight–three deer in the house!

We were going to have a casserole for dinner, with leftover turkey, gravy, and mashed potatoes from Saturday (when we had our Thanksgiving, with some friends over), and stuffing on the side. Well, around dinner time everybody was pretty hungry (think of it…all that meat and unable to eat it!), and Ben asked what was for dinner. I told him the casserole, and he suggested running out and getting pizza! He talked to Mom and Dad, then Mom and Dad talked, and he went to Costco to get pizzas. He also brought home pop! (For breakfast I’m having leftover pizza, a couple small pieces of turkey, and a root beer!)

When we were gone, Abby wanted to know if we were getting “bad” deer. “No, they aren’t shooting bad deer, only good deer.”
“Ones with black tape on them?” she wanted to know. I’m not sure if she thought the muleys had black tape on their tails, or if they came with black tape on the leg (we use black tape to put the tag on).

Today we’ll finish washing, cutting Beth’s, grinding and wrapping hamburger. It’s quite a process…but many hands make light work! ;)

Misunderstanding

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Mom and I were peeling and cutting potatoes (we’re having our Thanksgiving dinner today, and people are coming over).
“Mom, are we having Chocolate French Silk Pie?” I asked. That’s my favorite kind of pie.
“No, we didn’t have any graham crackers.”
“Hey, what if we ask the boys to get some graham cracker crusts?” The boys had gone to Walmart to get stuffing and stuff.
“Sure, call them quick!”
I called. One of them answered, “Hi.”
“Hi, are you still at Walmart?”
Now, this is where the misunderstanding came in. Ben didn’t hear me says “Are you still at Walmart?” He only heard “Hi” then a blank space, so he said “Hi” again. But I heard “Aye”, like Eric says for yes.
So I said, “Can you get two graham cracker crusts please?”
“Um, I’m by Nate’s.” Nate is the “next door” neighbor.
“But I thought you said you were at Walmart still!”
“No…I didn’t hear you ask if you were at Walmart.”
“I did! I said ‘Hi, are you still at Walmart?’”
“I heard ‘Hi’ then a pause, so I said ‘Hi’ again!”
We laughed so hard!

What We Saw and What We Did

Saturday
10:30 am Off on our way! Dad said we were supposed to get up at 7 (he set his clock for 6:30…that’s cuz he hits snooze so much!), so I got up a little early to finish an email, but Mom wasn’t up yet so I had to wait a bit anyway! But I did get my email sent.
We packed our bedding and bags, and anything else we forgot, until we forgot something else! No, I mean we packed all the things we hadn’t before. Let’s hope we have enough toilet paper…
We don’t have cookies this time, either! Too bad. Let’s hope we have enough emergency rations too, eh?

You know how when an apple rots it is mulch for the ground? Well, is it cannibalism if an apple tree is mulched by its own apples?

10:45 am At the gas station. Ben’s filling his tank and Dad’s filling the gas tanks for the generator. You know this time, only the eight of us are going. (Only. ha!) Mom, Tess, Rase, Jay, Abby, and Elle Jane are at home…that means Dad, Ben, Joe, Eric, Beth, Em, Kate, and I are going. Over half the family, thanks to the twins being two instead of one!
We will definitely get to camp sooner than last time! (more…)

Goodbye again!

Tomorrow we’re going hunting again; until Thursday again. Don’t have too much fun without me! :D

Love y’all
