Cliché City

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

I really hate New Year’s. Sure, I like the food (we usually have a party or go to our friends’ for a party and have yummy food) and the skits (we usually do skits for said parties) and the company (at said parties), but everybody always says dumb cliché things.
“Talk to you next year!”
“I won’t see you for a whole year!” (which technically isn’t true)
and other things. I think it’s something built into everybody. Nobody can help it. It just HAS to come out!

So.

Um.

Talk to you next year…

Bonny Scotch Lass

Friday, December 29th, 2006

First of all, you have to know (in case you didn’t before) that our family has Scottish ancestry, and our last name originally was Scottish (the misspelling, which we use now–long story, is Irish). Scottish people have clans, complete with tartans, badges, war cries, etc. Beth and I are into Scottish stuff, so last time we were in Oregon, Papa (Dad’s dad) gave her and I “Scotch bonnets” (tams) made out of our clan’s tartan. Papa also gave me a length of wool cloth in our tartan.

I have this dress that’s blue denim, and it has a plaid vest-front on it, and the plaid is almost exactly like our tartan. The other day I got the bright idea to wear this dress and my Scotch bonnet. Unfortunately, none of my jackets or anything matched. (If you’re a girl, it’s pretty important to be coordinating…at least, if you’re an average girl.) So then I got another bright idea…and took out the length of wool cloth. Beth helped me a little, and I wore it like a shawl, clasped with a pin Grammoo had given me (one of our ancestors made it, but I don’t remember which one).

I thought I might be a little cold, so I wore some pretty gloves my friend’s family gave me for my birthday last year. Worked perfectly!

At one place we shopped, a lady said I looked “so cute in that tam”!

Next year we will be able to enact our own Nativity scene!

(Lord willing, Mom’s gonna have a baby in August or September!!)

Quick Bits

  • Anne Random thought about how people take things for granted: 100 years ago, photographs were novel. Now people take them on their cell phones every day without thinking twice!
